Riols In the valley of the river Jaur, at the foot of the Monts du Somail, the village of Riols is situated at 250 metres above sea level, in the heart of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park. The village is enclosed between the hills of the Montagnes Noir and the mountains of the Espinose. Riols, including the many hamlets (hameaus) that fall under the municipality, has just under 800 inhabitants. The village has a traditional baker, who bakes baguettes and croissants in the traditional way. The baker has even won the prize for the best baguette in the Herault! Since the summer of 2024, there has also been a butcher in the village. In 2025, the butcher should also open a small bistro. For other groceries, the residents (and tourists) have to go to St.-Pons-de-Thomières, which has 2,500 inhabitants and is four kilometres away. Riols has a rich community life and several times a year a village festival is held, including: Last weekend of June - Three days of funfair with a live performance by a band every evening for which hundreds of people from all parts of the Herault (and beyond) come to Riols. With a live show on Saturday with dance, music and song. July 13 - The night before the independence celebration. With a BBQ, a torchlight procession and a grand (professional) fireworks. Followed by live music and a dance evening on the square in front of the town hall.
